Spikes, Studs and Soles: What Runners Can Learn From a Golf Shoe

What spiked and lugged soles each do underfoot, why golf shoes split into two families, and what a runner can read in a sole before winter.

Why did golf shoes split into spikes and lugs?

Golf asks one shoe to do two contradictory jobs: hold the feet still while the body rotates above them during a swing, and carry the player several miles across mixed ground between shots. Spiked shoes answer the first: replaceable cleats, now almost always moulded plastic rather than metal, set under heel and forefoot to pin the foot against the turf during the turn. Spikeless shoes answer the second, with a sole of moulded lugs and ridges that grips through friction and bends freely for walking. What does a spiked sole do that a lugged sole cannot?

It penetrates. A narrow hard point pressed into firm wet ground finds hold beneath the surface film of moisture and grass, where rubber of the same pressure skates on top. That is the physics a cross-country runner borrows when a race shoe accepts metal pins: on wet, closely mown grass, a handful of thin points under heel and forefoot hold where road-shoe rubber slips. A lug cannot pierce. It works by loading a wider face of rubber against the ground, deforming around irregularities and displacing soft material such as mud or sand, and it keeps working on surfaces that defeat a spike: tarmac paths, gravel, stone steps, the clubhouse floor. Spikes concentrate force on few contact points, so they feel flat and firm underfoot while lugged shoes feel higher and more cushioned. Each system wins on the surface it was drawn for.

Does wet winter ground change what the sole should be?

Wet ground does not change the physics, but it changes which layer of the ground does the work. On firm turf made slick by rain or dew, the surface film defeats smooth rubber, so anything that pierces it, whether spikes, thin sharp lugs or grooved edges, holds the advantage; this is the early tee time and the start gun. In deep mud the ground itself turns soft, penetration stops being the problem and release becomes one: widely spaced lugs shed soil as the foot lifts, while tightly packed low nubs clog and become a smooth plate. Golfers meet both inside one round and generally carry one pair; runners in an English winter league meet both across a season and can own two, spiked for grass, deeply lugged for the bogs. How should a runner read a trail or cross sole?

Read it from below, in four steps: depth, spacing, edge, placement. Depth is how far the lugs stand proud of the sole; deeper lugs bite further into soft ground and roll less comfortably on hard paths. Spacing is the gap between lugs; wide gaps shed mud, tight patterns put more rubber on rock and root. Edge is the shape of each lug wall, because a sharp shoulder and cut grooves, the moulded descendants of the spike's job, hold on wet stone and packed earth where rounded profiles slide. Placement is where the working zone sits: under the forefoot for drive, under the heel for braking on descents, a smoother plate in the arch for firm tracks. Shoes that accept pins add a fifth check, the pin length the receptacles take, longer for sloppier fields. None of this needs a brand name; it needs ten minutes with the shoe upside down.

What carries over, and what should stay on the fairway?

Three ideas travel well. The two-family split is honest engineering: a shoe built to anchor a rotating foot and a shoe built to walk miles are different tools, and a sole that promises everything does several things adequately. Replaceable traction is a system, not a gimmick: golfers renew cleats as they wear, and a runner whose cross shoes take pins can tune grip for each fixture instead of watching a moulded sole wear smooth. And the sole is read, not branded: the pattern underneath predicts winter behaviour better than any name on the sidewall. What stays on the fairway is the swing-specific engineering, the torsional plates and pivot geometry that let a golfer rotate hard over a planted foot, because a running foot lands, loads and leaves thousands of times a session rather than turning once with force. Borrow the vocabulary, not the shoe.
